Cleaning your motor.

Cleaning your motor
ever wondered why your car is running slower than your mates yet you have the same motor.
it may be that your motor needs to be cleaned.

what you need is: -
Comm Stick (available from all good model shops)
motor cleaning spray (available from all good model shops)
screw driver

1. take the motor out of your car
2. take the brush springs off and remove brushed from the carriers.
3. look at the comm ( the copper coloured bit) if its black it need cleaning.
4. spray some motor spray on the comm
5. put the comm stick in the brush carrier and turn the motor over by hand. (this removes dirt from the comm) then spray a little tiney bit on the brushes and use the round end of the comm stick on them.

Total motor strip down

occasianaly your motor will need to be stripped down totaly
this means remove the endbell off the motor. remove the armature from the motor can and put to one side
make sure you dont lose the litte shims that are on the armature
check the inside of the motor can for fluff and dirt. then get the motor spray and spray ino the can this will remove any other dirt. and leave to dry.

then get the armature u have already put to one side.
spray the coils with motor spray u will see the dirt in the liquid. once this has turned clear the armature is clean then reasenble the motor. and install back into your vehicle

Just to add to what rush15 has put, depending on the turn of your motor, the commutator will need what is known as "skimming" every so often.

This is where the armature is put on a special lathe, and the comm cut by a diamond tip to get it true again. Most Model Shops will own their own lathe and will charge you a small fee for skimming. However, it is well worth it because, even though you are taking material off the comm, the motor will last longer if skimmed regularly because there will be less overall wear.

It's also a good idea to replace the brushes at the same time as having a skim, that way your motor will be as good as new.

i ahve found that for a quick clean in your pit time in between races use wd40.
smells lovley on a hot motor, or that could just be me.
