Hi,

i mainly race but also bash my Baja occasionally, the only things i found i needed to upgrade was the clutch for a decent racing clutch giving better reliability, some steel skids to protect the underside of the rear shockers from wearing and outwear pre filters for the air filter and pull start[stops fine dust getting in] but apart from those things i have found the car to be virtually bomb proof.

Usefull spares to carry would be a pair of front wishbones[lower arms] and maybe some shock shafts just incase you accidentaly hit something, then it`s just fuel and rear tyres.

There are loads and loads of option parts available from HPi and other manufacturers if you have loads of money and/or like bling, more power etc etc etc,but i find the stock car super reliable and very good value to run.Remember,if you start fitting loads of alloy parts or making it much faster, the weight goes up by adding alloy and the costs go up after accidents.
Plastic is cheap to replace.

PS,if you have the RTR 5b then you could go for the SS shocker inserts, they have thicker shafts and an alloy shock slider which are definately stronger than the stock 5b ones.
